The Basics of an RV Carport

It may seem almost counterintuitive to put a carport over or around an RV, but in truth, it isn't. Yes, the RV is meant to be a roof over our heads, a home away from home--but who will put a roof over the RV's head? Like other vehicles, RVs lose their shine due to rain and dust and pollen. Also like other vehicles, sun can dim paint, wear away rubber, and weaken glass. That doesn't even include its harmful effects on dashboards and steering wheels, or the fact that after an RV has been heated by the sun, it takes nearly three times as long and twice as much energy to cool it back down to bearable temperatures. Enter the RV carport.

Of necessity, an RV carport is larger than your standard carport, large enough to allow the RV to be backed easily into it or out of it. It has to be tall enough to allow for the RV's extra height, and sometimes but not always, it will have canvas sides that roll down, to protect the sides of the RV from bad weather. However, the RV carport will almost never have solid sides, since the RV needs to be able to be hooked up to water, electricity, and possibly even sewage, while parked. (This last is rarely necessary, but for general cleaning and maintenance, the other two are.) Additionally, the RV carport should be sturdy. Because it seldom has sides, it may be possible for any large wind to lift the RV carport completely out of the ground, damaging the RV and anything else that happens to be nearby, in the process, unless it is properly attached to the ground. Proper installation is essential when it comes to RV carports, and the average homeowner will probably be more comfortable hiring a reputable local builder to do it than trying to do it themselves.
